Aniekan Bassey of Akwa Ibom state emerges as speaker of 7th Assembly

The Assembly Chamber of Akwa Ibom opened its seventh assembly today with Aniekan Bassey (Uruan-PDP), emerging as a speaker.

Bassey, a recurring member, was appointed by Mr. NSE Essien (Onna-PDP), seconded by Mr. Mark Esset (NCTS Atai-PDP) and unanimously chosen by the 25 members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) present.

Secretary of the House of Representatives, Ms. Mandu UMOREN had previously read a letter of announcement from Governor Udom Emmanuel, giving life to the 7th Assembly in line with the provisions of article 105 (3) of the 1999 Constitution, the second amended.

The former speaker attached to the 6th meeting, Ms. Felicia Bassey also emerged as vice president, Mr. Uduak Ududo (Ikot Abasi / Oriental Obolo-PDP) named Bassey and was seconded by Mr. Emmanuel Ekpenyong (Ini-PDP).

In his acceptance speech, Bassey thanked God for his election as a speaker and recognized his party, the PDP and its constituency for giving them the opportunity to represent them.

He thanked his colleagues for trusting him as promised not to disappoint them, said the legislator under his command would be a transparent, responsible and results-oriented management.

“We shall operate an open door policy that will welcome constructive criticisms and ensure that decisions are reached with the full consent of members.

“Let me assure my colleagues and people of the state that I will not take the responsibility placed on me for granted. Let it be known that we all belong to each other. We all need each other. To serve each other by sacrificing for the common good of the people,’’ he said.

The House adjourned plenary to reconvene on Tuesday June 18.
