ASUU Alleges harassment, intimidation by Ambrose Alli University Management

The Academic Staff Union (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU) chapter, Ekpoma, has expressed concern about the alleged harassment and intimidation of union staff leaders and the lack of respect by unions for management ‘University.

They argue that the university administration recently deployed a team of police officers to the school entrance to prevent them from reporting on the service and even essential services.

The president of the ASUU chapter, Dr. Monday Igbafen, in a statement made available to journalists in Benin City, the state capital, said Thursday that the union is concerned about the resumption of the union intimidation act. University staff.

According to him, “it is an accepted fact that it is wrong and illegal for representatives of any union to harass non-members at the door and prevent them from showing up for service.” Igbafen said.

It is unjustified that the university administration invites the police to harass the union representatives of the institution applying the directive or the resolution of their unions.

‘This is an unfortunate event and it is unacceptable, this amounts to the militarization of the university administration’s affairs. ”

In response to the accusation, University spokesman Edward Aihevba said that ASUU and others involved have consistently criticized the institution’s efforts to implement government directives regarding reporting personnel to service during closure.

” Level 1-12 personnel in civil service (1-11 at university) are required to work from home, while all personnel of level 12 and above, including those in essential services, must report that they work daily with full adherence to social distancing and other preventive guidelines as indicated by the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and WHO ”

Aihevba, while calling for caution, urged union leaders to keep in mind that all disputes or complaints are generally resolved at the negotiating table, adding that the University would not tolerate representatives of any union that harasses people in the door and prevented them from showing up. for the service.
