Nasir el Rufai, Kaduna state Governor, signed the 2020 state budget of N259.25 billion.
Hadiza Balarabe, Deputy governor of the state, presented the draft budget of N257.9 billion to the state house of assembly on October 15, but then increased to N259.25 billion.
El-Rufai stated that N184.1 billion (71%) was allocated to capital expenditure, while N75.14 billion was allocated to recurring expenses.
Capital expenditure on education and health make up N75.44 billion of the entire capital budget of N184.1 billion, while capital expenditure on infrastructure and housing will take N68.5 billion
The governor described the budget as “reinforcing the government’s governance agenda to build human capital and promote equal opportunity”.
He said his administration has successfully aligned fiscal and calendar years in the state for five consecutive years.
The governor praised the state assembly chamber for collaborating with the government’s executive arm to implement administrative policies and programs.
He described the assembly as “the most productive in the history of the state” and claimed to have passed over 80 bills.
He also praised Aminu Shagali, president of the house, for working through party lines to improve the state’s fortunes.
He also thanked the lieutenant governor for working tirelessly to produce the draft budget and to present the document to the assembly.
El-Rufai said his vice president is “the first woman and, indeed, the first vice governor to present a draft budget in the country’s history”.
