Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, representative of the Delta Central senatorial district, was sworn in.
Omo-Agege was promoted by the Secretary of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori.
The Delta legislator voted 68 votes to defeat his rival, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who voted 37 votes.
The former vice president of the Senate was surprisingly appointed by Chukwuka Utazi, representing the senatorial district of Enugu North.
Ekweremadu belongs to the Popular Democratic Party (PDP), while Omo-Agege belongs to the Congress of All Progress (APC) and was adopted by the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari.
