Tribunal declares Atiku a Nigerian

The presidential election petition court rejected the All Progressive Congress party’s request against Atiku Abubakar for its alleged non-Nigerian citizenship.

Speaking of the verdict in his sixth ruling on Monday, the court ruled that its power does not include determining the status of a signatory in an electoral dispute.

He said his powers were to determine whether a person elected to the office of president was validly elected and not to consult the qualifications of the signatories to contest the elections, the result of which had been consulted.

The court stated that APC should have submitted a cross-petition if it tried to challenge the qualification of the first signatory (Atiku) who had contested the elections.
